Right Way empowers staff, volunteers, players and coaches to ‘Take CHARDG’ of their individual development, both in basketball and as leaders in the community.
Our CHARDG philosophy permeates everything Right Way does. Purposely misspelled to make it more memorable, we also want to acknowledge a freedom within our culture to make mistakes as a means towards growth and maturity.
The word “charge” in a basketball sense is putting your body on the line for your team, an important quality of being an ultimate teammate. Outside of the sport, it represents a mindset to intentionally move forward or move ahead, the implication being that there is a focus on continuing to improve.
These are the 6 guiding principles of our ‘Take CHARDG’ philosophy.
COMMUNICATION – Both verbal and non-verbal. Proactive, responsible, creative exchanging of information. Players and coaches must engage in meaningful communication on and off the court.
HUMILITY – Realizing at the core of our being that we are not superior to anyone else, and that we are not inferior to anyone else. Individual contributions are important, but team success is paramount.
ACCOUNTABILITY – A healthy culture has an environment of grace that places value on taking responsibility for your actions (or inactions). We encourage mistakes and in so doing, take a step towards becoming more vulnerable with others.
RESILIENCY – Adversity is an unavoidable fact of life. Whether as a result of a mistake we’ve made, or a setback that has us feeling as though we’ve been treated unfairly. We will come up against moments in time where our response, our resilience, will be a clear demonstration of our character and our priorities.
DETAILS – Brad Stevens famously said, “When considering the consequences of not doing the little things, you realize there are no little things.” We recognize the importance of noticing and emphasizing the nuances of the game.
GROWTH – Doing away with the status quo and open to critically examining everything we do. Always wanting to improve as individuals but also expecting that of others as well.
